It was March 2022 in Irpin, a small city North of Kyiv, Ukraine. We witnessed civilians suffering immeasurable terror as their families were killed and homes destroyed. With emergency services cut off, we saw civilian casualties being driven out on the hoods of old cars that bore a cross in red tape. We witnessed old women being carried out in stretchers by their sons. We saw bodies in the streets. There were many American Veterans trying to help, but we saw that they were almost always ill-equipped and had little to no support.
After three months of volunteer work throughout Ukraine, we returned to Irpin. Having been liberated, Irpin once again saw street vendors selling coffee, children riding bicycles, and couples holding hands as they strolled through the park. We recognized the sacrifices needed to save people’s lives. We understood the materials and logistical support needed to help people in need.
A vision was formed – What if there was an organization that helped Veterans use their special skills in crisis areas around the world? The Warfighter Foundation was formed.
